Personality: Napstablook is very sad. That's the first impression anyone would get upon meeting them. Napstablook wears their feelings on their ghostly sleeve, and those feelings are almost all overwhelmingly negative. Whether they're on the verge of tears or just feeling casually dejected, it seems like they're always in a bad mood of one kind or another. Napstablook is full of insecurities and doubts that sometimes seem so strong as to be paralyzing; in their own words, their life is "pretty boring," and they don't seem to have either the energy or will to change that. Although they maintain a humble routine of caring for their family's snail farm, and even try to keep up with a few hobbies here and there, they spend most of their time shut away in their house or seeking out lonely places where they can be away from other people and alone with their thoughts. They actually spend quite a lot of effort in avoiding everyone else, even going to such desperate lengths as pretending (poorly) to be asleep just so they won't have to talk to a person literally right in front of them.

This is partly a result of a critically low self-esteem. Either because of natural personality or a bad history, Napstablook believes that they aren't worthy of taking up anyone's time or attention, so they keep to theirself partially to avoid being an inconvenience to others. They seem to be used to being left behind, so they don't even bother trying to get close to people anymore. That way they won't trouble anyone, and they can't be abandoned again. But their reclusiveness is somewhat for their own comfort as well; even in their better moods, they seem to have a naturally subdued nature and get rather overwhelmed by those with more outgoing or boisterous temperaments. They often pull away from the attention of their neighbor Undyne, despite her friendliness, because her VERY intense personality is just too much for them (also, her attempts at friendship usually involve wrestling). When they fail at simply avoiding people, their timidness can make them something of a pushover: for example, in timelines where they are attacked by the fallen human, Napstablook will pretend to take the hits despite being an incorporeal, and thus invulnerable, ghost. They'll even lower their HP manually, just so their attacker won't feel bad about being unable to hit them. And even if they were attacked, they'll still invite the human to come visit their house and hang out when they see them again later.

It wouldn't be wrong to say that this hints at some amount of desperation: although very introverted, Napstablook doesn't necessarily WANT to be by theirself all the time. Rather, they're a very lonely person who desires companionship, but is either too scared to seek it out or too down on theirself to believe they deserve it. They don't like to approach people, especially strangers, but it's easy enough to get them to start opening up just by showing a little bit of patience and kindness. They really don't want to be a bother, and they'll downplay their interest to the point of almost seeming passive-aggressive. But despite their protests they really do appreciate the visit and the opportunity to show off their home and hobbies.

Once someone has made it past the initial awkwardness and deflections, the ghost becomes quite a bit more casual and friendly. They prove to be a good host, offering snacks (even if their visitor can't actually eat it) and inviting guests to join them in the family tradition of lying on the floor and feeling like garbage (it's nicer than it sounds). Despite their usual habit of putting theirself down, they even feel comfortable enough to share their interests, talking about music and their work on the farm. They can even be a bit blunt and sarcastic at times, when they're not busy with constant worrying (or even when they're too worried to realize how they sound).

Of course, it takes almost no effort to crush their feelings again and make them revert back to a crying mess...but if someone has the patience and gentleness to keep reassuring them, Napstablook can be a very caring, considerate friend. They don't hold grudges, even when maybe they should, and they have the capacity to be very loyal. They're extremely socially awkward, unaware of social cues to the point of being a bit ridiculous (they once walked in on two people in a fight to the death, and thought they were just a couple of friends having fun), but they're eager to please and will do their best to impress people...even if they're secretly convinced that's impossible to do. Breaking through their depression is no simple task, but deep down, there is a part of them that seems to long for something more exciting and fulfilling than their current life. They just need a lot of help to start reaching for it.

Abilities: Napstablook is a ghost-type monster, so they have a couple of abilities typical of both Undertale monsters and ghosts. First is their magic "bullets": all monsters in Undertale can use magic to create bullet patterns for things like fighting, and also looking cool. These bullets take on various forms depending on the monster's themes and personalities. Napstablook...just cries. Their tears are compared to acid and can be rather painful. But Napstablook is immune to their own tears, and can shape and use them for various purposes (like crying theirself a nice hat). Also, they're a ghost! That means they're incorporeal and can phase through walls, fly around, and disappear. It's shown that they CAN interact with physical objects, if they so choose. However, since ghosts are naturally incorporeal, they can't actually be harmed or killed (unless they possess and fully merge with a corporeal "body", which Napstablook has no interest in). This last ability is probably the only thing that would need to be nerfed for the game 'cause hey! No invulnerability. I guess the Ringmaster could do something like, when the contract is formed it just ties Napstablook to the carnival in a more physical way? So they can still phase through things like normal but their body has a bit more, like..."substance" to it, so they can actually be harmed with enough power. And fae magic can just do whatever to them, Because Fairies.
CARNIVAL
Soul Colour: Blue-ky
Ideal Jobs: SFX Tech, animal keeper, roustabout
Relevant Experience:
SFX Tech: well, more like sound tech? There isn't really a specific job listing for "music" or "DJ", so I figured this would be the closest category. Napstablook is a sound-mixer/electronic musician who has experience producing and remixing music for theirself and others. They're talented enough that big star Mettaton trusts them to join his performances in the Pacifist Ending (it's true that this is mostly out of guilt, but it's also not the only possible evidence of Napstablook's skill).

Animal Keeper: well, they ran a snail farm back home, so we know they're at least fine dealing with gross slimy creatures!

Roustabout: can't go wrong with unskilled labor.

Reason for Joining: THAT KINDA DEPENDS. Per the test drive thread below, Napstablook would have (very awkwardly) asked the Ringmaster if she could get rid of the Barrier that's trapping the monsters in the Underground. Of course, it looks like Papyrus already asked for that, but he's from a different timeline. Frisk appears to be from the "same" timeline as Napstablook, and also essentially asked for the same thing. I don't know if the Ringmaster would bother to let them know about any of that though! Maybe she'll just say yes and consider it a two-birds-one-stone kind of deal. Which would be kind of mean of her. But also funny.

Of course, even if she does decide to tell them, it would be extremely simple to just bully the ghost into taking a contract for, essentially nothing. Which would be REALLY mean of her. But also very, very funny.
